Life outside the box

Living in a box

We grow up in a society that is driven by a totalitarian system. Living in this box is not easy, but for most of us, it’s all we know. We are literally labeled as taxpayers. This alone should set off alarm bells. The crazy part is how most citizens will defend this system, often with their lives. I self-published an e-book, Free I Am that goes into a lot more detail on this subject.  I promise not to push my anarchist ideals of a self-governed society in this article too hard. Life outside the box is very possible in this day and age, and millions of people are discovering how.

Life outside the box
turning dreams into reality

Life outside the box

These are exciting times, with loads of opportunities.  Life outside the box starts with some conscious decision making. Do you want the 9-5 job in a workspace that you do not enjoy?  For some people,  the answer might be yes. It takes some courage to leave your comfort zone and go against the grain. The life that our parents and grandparents lived in is a lot different than how it looks today.

Making the decision to break out of the box allows us to start living on our own terms. Life outside the box is all about self-discovery, fun, adventure, and freedom. Choosing an alternative lifestyle over the stressful existence our slave masters have designed for us is a no-brainer for me.

Life outside the box
freedom is a choice

Weighing the options

If you are still reading this blog then you are in the company of like-minded people who naturally think outside the box. Life outside the box starts now! Most of us ‘free thinkers’ have dreams of travel, but are not sure where or how to start. There are numerous options out there, Your choice will depend upon your interests.

I can only recommend what appeals to me and many others that are wired the same way. My minimalist mindset would have me drawn to nature and not necessary an ultra-modern city. I do enjoy exploring cities, but for not more than a day or two. A lot of people are considering Portugal or Spain as a stepping stone in their plans of slow travel. Working as an English teacher is a perfect way of seeing the world. A premier TEFL course will help you qualify in most countries to teach English.

putting plans into motion

Goal setting

Life outside the box starts with setting SMART goals, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed goals. Once you have worked out the specifics, then put your plans in motion. Here are links to some great deals on flights and accommodation.

Achieving goals is so rewarding and provides us with the confidence to stretch ourselves and set even bigger ones. No matter how small the goal is that you wish to attain, don’t dismiss it. We need to practice at winning in life. Our whole lives, we have been programmed to fear stepping out into the world and taking responsibility for our future. We can’t rely on others for our happiness.

Plastic pollution

How did we get to this point?

We will see what we are allowing to happen when we choose to acknowledge the truth. Plastic pollution is slowly killing our planet. We started using plastic in a time when our population stood at a quarter of what it is today. Plastic eventually replaced many robust materials that would have lasted much longer than their plastic replacements. In the last century, the production of plastic has got completely out of hand. We now produce over 300 million tons of it annually and less than 10% of this plastic is recycled.

Plastic pollution

This planet and life as we know it cannot withstand much more of our destructive behavior. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch which lies between Hawaii and California is evidence of our disregard for Mother Earth. This floating island of plastic pollution is said to be the size of Texas. This garbage patch has an estimated weight of 79000 metric tons.

There are more of these garbage patches floating in our oceans. One of them in the Indian Ocean is covering an area of 5 million square kilometers. By the year 2050, the marine debris is expected to triple. The fishing industry is one of the biggest culprits in polluting our oceans. Most of the waste is fishing gear and nets. Is it too late, or can we fix this thing?

Plastic pollution in our oceans take the lives of over 100 million marine animals each year. This alone should be reason enough to stop us in our tracks.

Plasatic pollution
This albatross chick is just one out of millions of victims

Can we fix this?

I wonder why it takes so long for the government to intervene and bring an end to the use of fossil fuels. The only possible reason for the delay in governments taking action is money. These psychopaths have no care for Earth or her inhabitants. This is no conspiracy theory, just look around at the devastation. People and animals are the least of their concern.

Plastic pollution can only be contained or controlled by means of a global effort. We need to take responsibility for our actions. It is no use blaming or relying on corrupt politicians to correct a problem that they are financially benefitting from. It is up to us to stop purchasing products made from non-renewable resources. A great way to help is to volunteer at a local beach or river clean up.

Light at the end of the tunnel

I believe there is light at the end of the tunnel. An organization, Ocean Cleanup has set out to tackle the job of removing the Pacific Garbage Patch, at a cost of $ 32 M. If they are successful, we can apply similar techniques in other areas of the ocean.

There is the talk of using plastic waste and marine debris in repairing roads. This method apparently works very well and is superior to the use of asphalt. Repairing roads with used plastic waste is a huge step forward in combating this massive problem. Plastic pollution can be collected and put to good use. This is not easy, nor cheap. However, it can be done.

Alternatives

There are always alternatives. Stop buying plastic water bottles. Glass bottles are a far better option. Refuse plastic bags and rather get reusable shopping bags. Insist on cornstarch, biodegradable packaging for your fruit and veg, which is readily available and cheap. Plastic additives like prodegradant concentrates promote oxidation. This means they break down the plastic enough for microorganisms to consume them, eventually turning into carbon dioxide. Another exciting alternative to polystyrene is nanowood which will hopefully stop the production of styrofoam.

We can replace nearly every product we use with reusable, renewable or sustainable materials. Companies and ethical online shopping malls like vhawker.com are providing the consumer with a wide variety of options.

Taking responsibility

There is simply no excuse for any of us to continue contributing to the senseless suffering of marine wildlife. Most forms of plastic are toxic and will only lead to disease and poisoning of eco-systems. Chlorinated plastic can seep through the soil into the groundwater, affecting all who drink from it. There is so much that can go wrong if we continue along this path of madness. But let’s take a stand and turn this thing around.

Save our Trees

What is happening to our trees?

Deforestation is a global problem. The destruction of our oxygen source is taking place all over the planet. The problem is not just in the Amazon rainforest but on every continent. Forests are vanishing in front of our eyes. This is happening in countries that are home to some of the major green initiatives. Environmental ministries either don’t have much say or they have another agenda. Either way, governments have failed our planet miserably. Save our trees!

I recently saw a documentary on Romania, and how illegal logging is leaving the hillsides of virgin forests bare. Greenpeace, Romania reports an average of 26 cases per day, costing the state $10.4m.

The public is assisting authorities in combatting illegal logging. They have managed to seize a significant amount of timber and logging equipment and have made many arrests. There was a recent investigation into the deforestation of the Carpathian mountains, home to some of Europe’s last virgin forest. It shows the involvement of an Austrian logging company and other high profile companies involved in an illegal logging ring.

Save our trees

Tree planting organizations are popping up everywhere. Groups are forming and mobilizing volunteers to plant trees in rural and urban areas. Tree planting festivals and gatherings are becoming a common thing among conscious communities. It is never too late to save our trees. It is up to every one of us to make an effort in saving and replanting trees. We owe it to the next generation.

People living in cities and urban areas can actually make the biggest impact. The consumer dictates how many trees get cut down. It is up to us to vote with our wallets. There are so many ethical products to choose from now. Many merchants have tree planting policies in place. For every purchase made, a certain amount of trees are planted.

Keeps hot liquids hot 6-10+ hours

Tree hugging

Tree hugging was something joked about, when activists went to extremes to protect trees from been cut down. People thought it was strange when protestors would tie themselves to an ancient tree, in order to protect it. Unfortunately, most of us waited until the irreversible damage had been done before waking up.

If we are to turn this thing around, then we all need to become pro-active tree huggers. Signing a petition is a start but not nearly enough. We need a complete mind shift in how we live and consume. There is no need to purchase new, inferior quality furniture made from softwood forests that are under threat. There is so much high quality, used furniture available to buy.

Save our Trees
save our forests

Less is more

Minimalism is no longer just a way out for those who cant afford to furnish their homes. The minimalist movement is spreading among rich and poor, as people are beginning to awaken. Less is more. Used pallets and many other reusable materials are becoming bed bases and dining-room tables in many a wealthy home.

We can change our disturbed consumer culture, one purchase at a time. We can avoid filling the home with stuff that does not serve us or the planet. Let’s focus on products that don’t come at a high cost to the environment. You will find local reclaim, refurbish dealers everywhere. Let’s support them and be part of the solution and not the problem.

Ethical options

There are numerous ethical options available for those who are transitioning into conscious consumers. Buy long-lasting, quality products. Support producers that contribute to positive change. At www.vhawker.com, there exists a virtual mall that houses ethical online retailers that share the same values. Save our trees!

Our values define us.

We want to build a future to be proud of. Let’s align our actions with our values, for they define who we are. At vHawker there is a culture of personal growth and self-improvement. Each of us is striving to be better versions of ourselves. We are living in exciting times and circumstances are forcing us to rethink our lives. There is much to look forward to as we partner with like-minded people and communities.

My intention in writing this blog is to integrate my passion for ethical living with my business. I choose to make a living from what is helpful, rather than harmful to Mother Earth.

I hope this was a worthwhile read. Please check out the links and provide some feedback in the comment section below. Thank you for your time.

There is no excuse for animal abuse

You don’t have to be cruel to rule my world.

We are seeing a huge demand for cruelty-free products, from all over the world. This rapidly growing movement is largely thanks to activism and social media. The last few years have produced awareness of animal exploitation like never before. There is no excuse for animal abuse, thanks to all those who tirelessly fight for animal liberation.

People from all corners of the globe are waking up and demanding ethical alternatives. I long for the day that they declare an international ban on all animal testing. There have been marches in many countries, handing memorandums over to politicians, demanding such a ban.

There is no excuse for animal abuse
active until all cages are empty

There is no excuse for animal abuse, ever

Most of us have no clue as to what animals go through on an ongoing basis. All this just for the financial gain of greedy corporations. Nearly all our toiletries and cosmetics are linked to animal torture. Sometimes the finished product might not be tested on animals but several of its ingredients have or contain animal products.

There is no excuse for animal abuse. There is enough footage of animals been enslaved and tortured their whole lives by evil laboratory staff so people cant plead ignorance any more. This practice must end now!

Always alternatives

Thankfully we are moving forward and there are many cruelty-free options to choose from. Our ethical online mall, www.vhawker.com is bursting at the seams with high quality and stylish options. There are laptop bags, clutch purses, wallets, backpacks and a vast selection of clothing. The cosmetic and toiletry ranges offer something for every taste.

There is no excuse for animal abuse

Medical testing is also under scrutiny now and the pharmaceutical companies are looking at producing non-cruel products. Scientists are developing new ways of testing, without the use of animals. Read this article on PETA’s website. They are starting to pay attention to the cry of the activist, “There is no excuse for animal abuse!”

Organizations like Beauty Without Cruelty and Cruelty Free International endorse non-cruel products. There is loads of information on their websites that will educate and help you make better choices. Check first before you buy.

Staying active

I am unapologetic in my stance against animal exploitation. There can never be enough awareness on the subject of animal suffering until every cage is empty.

I do realize this blog comes across as a bit depressing, however the positive lies in the options we now have. Activism comes in many forms, whether it’s holding a sign or buying a vegan bag. Together we are making a difference.

Special thanks to Anonymous for the Voiceless for the amazing job they are doing.

How to stay healthy

Staying healthy

We all want to live long and healthy lives. Everyone starts there health journey at different points in their lives and in very different ways. In most cases, people wait until they have a health crisis before making positive changes in their life. Cancers, heart disease, strokes and auto-immune disease are becoming all too common. How to stay healthy, once we have achieved some success is also a huge challenge. Watch this video on what is the main cause of all the dread disease that has become the norm in our society.

Staying healthy is a complete mind shift and one needs to be super motivated to sustain the new lifestyle. I find the best thing for me is engrossing myself in relevant motivational books, podcasts, etc.

Eating plan

A well thought out eating plan is vital in maintaining our health. How to stay healthy? I suggest talking to a qualified nutritionist that holds a degree in nutrition. For me personally, a raw food, vegan diet is optimum. There is really no other way of life that makes me feel better. I have found that a low fat, high carb diet, consisting mostly of fruit works best. Nutrient dense, low-calorie plant food is a natural weight-loss plan with very little planning. Most raw foodists just eat until they are full with very little calorie counting.

There are situations where a supplement is necessary – when we don’t have access to enough quality fruit and vegetables. I would recommend a brand like Sunwarrior’s completely natural and raw vitamins. They have a whole range of excellent products to choose from via www.vhawker.com. Their ingredients are unprocessed and of the highest quality.

Exercise

People everywhere are getting into shape, in some way or another. There are so many fun ways to strengthen and tone our bodies. Callanetics and other home workouts are very popular, as you can do them in privacy and at your own pace. Cardiovascular exercises are important and easy to incorporate into your daily routine. By choosing to run home from work instead of driving, will not only save you fuel but give you a good workout and help reduce stress.

How to stay motivated

How to stay healthy and motivated to do so is the determining factor. I touched on this subject in a previous post, wireless earphones that never fall out. All that makes any sense to me, is living a healthy life in full. You can’t have that mindset of “I’ve done well this week so I deserve a treat.” For every day of bad eating and no exercise, you are undoing a full week of hard work.

Stick to your routine and learn to enjoy it. See your food in a new light, not as just something you have to do but rather something you appreciate. I have written about mindful eating in other blogs. You will do well to read up on that. A great way to enjoy your workouts is by listening to music or a podcast. in this way, you are also nourishing your mind. It could even be a motivational podcast on “How to stay healthy” The best earplugs I know of, that never fall out can be found on www.vawker.com

Information overload

There is so much information out there on nutrition and fitness, both good and bad. I can only hope you find your way through this sea of expert opinions. Everyone seems to be an expert these days. Very often, people form an opinion over a single Facebook post that they read and then share it as factual.

Every word I have written here is based on personal experience and nutritional advice that I have received from a qualified holistic nutritionist.

I hope you have found this article helpful. Please leave a comment below and share some of your experiences.

I wish you the very best on your journey.

create a fair life for all

ethical trading

Cape Trader is a platform for promoting ethical trading and products that do the least amount of harm. The conscious consumer has so many affordable options regarding cruelty free fashion, food and every essential item in the home.

Wanting to create a fair life for all our children and every living being should be our main focus. I like to think that we all share a deep intrinsic motivation to do good. Unfortunately most people dont look past their own greed for the latest device or their favourite coffee blend.

why fair trade ?

If you have seen the certification symbol on certain products, you are already aware of the movement. Why fair trade? Fairtrade International and other organizations that share fair trade principles are here to help create a fair life for all. They are working hard to bring fairness to trade relationships between producers and consumers.

To create a fair life for all, goes beyond just paying a fair price to the farmer. As consumers, we should dig a little deeper and discover what exactly we are supporting by purchasing conventional products. It seems it is easier to stick our heads in the sand or look the other way, rather then thinking about the serious injustices continuing all around us.

We now know what is going on as far as child labour and other forms of exploitation is concerned. The question is, what we are going to do about it. No one expects you to quit your job and move to South America and start a revolution. An easy way to help create a fair life for all, is simply choosing the fair trade product on the self.

create a fair life for all
create a fair life for all

sustainable production

The question of sustainable production and whether it is even worth supporting is often heard. Fairtrade and other ethical trading has been around for many years. Fairtrade International is a well planned and governed organization that meets world standards.

There are literally thousands of fair trade products on the shelves now. Minimum pricing has been managed in a sustainable way that benefits all concerned.

create a fair life for all
create a fair life for all

other advantages

The other advantages of supporting fair trade labels are sourcing superior quality products. Fairtrade International discourages the use of GMOs and encourages organic farming. Furthermore, they also train producers in composting and recycling.

In order to be a certified  Fair Trade producer, they need to be totally transparent in their administration. This means that by empowering workers, they consequently have access to education, healthcare and better living conditions.

The enviromental advantages to ethical farming practices are huge. Through proper training, farmers learn how to protect water, soil and virgin forests. Once educated, they tend to move away from the use harmful chemicals and gmo products.

the future

The techniques and farming practices taught by Fairtrade International have a positive impact on everyone concerned. This holistic approach has far reaching benefits that not only support the producer, but create a fair life for all.

Surely we all agree that the future looks so much more promising if we make a concerted effort to support ethical trade. The price paid for certification by producer and consumer is very small considering the alternatives.

Let’s continue to support small to medium size ethical producers and keep the conventional brands out of homes. Making a conscious decision to not support child labor and unethical practices, we can create a fair life for all.

alternatives

There are are always ethical alternatives to the conventional products that do very little for the environment. The cotton industry is notorious for the unhealthy farming and production of its products. At www.vhawker.com you will find many products available that are produced according to strict ethical trading principles.

Thank you for taking the time to read this article. I hope it was informative. I would love to hear from you. Drop me an email at robert@capetrader.net or comment below.
